Wellington Special (1974) By Alec Lumsden

The Wellington, which started its Service life as a medium bomber in 1938, was the mainstay of Bomber Command (and sole equipment of the East Anglican No 3 Group) until late in 1940.

Bloodied in combat on the second day of the war (September 4, 1939), the Wellington carried the greater part of the bombing offensive on German naval and industrial targets for the next twelve months. The very adaptability which made the Wellington so popular with the RAF accounted in no small measure for its being produced in greater numbers than any other multi-engined aeroplane built in Britain- 11,461 all told.
