Tasmanians In The Transvaal War (1905) By John Bufton

Tasmanians in the Transvaal War offers a vivid, documentary view of Tasmania’s role in the South African conflict. Through soldier diaries, letters, and contemporary reports, it presents the departure, campaigns, and return of Tasmanian contingents with clear, human detail.

This edition gathers first-hand accounts, official notes, and period illustrations to trace the war from its origins to the later stages, while highlighting the experiences of Tasmanian volunteers, including the bushmen contingents. The narrative emphasizes the lives, challenges, and behind-the-scenes events that shaped their service in South Africa.

John Bufton's account of Tasmania's contribution to the Second Boer War (1899–1902) in South Africa — referred to here by the contemporary term "Transvaal War," not to be confused with the earlier First Boer War of 1880–81. Drawing on soldiers' own diaries, letters and official despatches, the book covers the raising and service of Tasmania's contingents, including the Tasmanian Bushmen and the 1st and 3rd Battalions, and is particularly noted for its extensive photographic portraits of individually identified soldiers, alongside a full nominal roll and list of decorations and honours awarded.
