Savo: The Naval Disaster off Guadalcanal (1961) By R. F. Newcomb

When the American began their landings on Guadalcanal as part of the campaign to recapture the Solomon Islands, a protective screen force was stationed off Savo Island to the north-west of the landsings. On 9th August, 1942 a Japanese force of eight ships commanded by Admiral Mikawa, steamed at full speed past Savo Island, through the sleeping screening force, searchlights blazing all guns firing. In forty minutes four cruisers were lost, including HMAS Canberra. Casualities in the american and Australian ships were 1024 killed, 709 wounded: on the Japanese ships, 35 killed and 51 wounded. From his researches the author has pieced together a detailed, dramatic account of fumbling, confusion and timidity at high levels, an account that is illumined by great courage in the face of unbelievable and sudden disaster.
