Ned Herring: A life of Sir Edmund Herring (1980) By Stuart Sayers

At the beginning of World War II Herring was chosen by Blamey to command the artillery for the Second AIF and he fought with distinction in the desert before taking part in the Greek debacle. In August 1941 he was promoted to command the 6th Division operating in Palestine and Syria, then recalled to Australia following the Japanese victories in the Far East. Almost as soon as he returned he was placed in command of the forces in the Northern Territory where a Japanese invasion was expected. He succeeded Rowell in command in New Guinea for the Owen Stanley and Papuan campaigns
