This Note offers observations and preliminary conclusions based on the first phase of a project entitled "The Effectiveness of U.S. Military Training Activities in Promoting Internal Defense and Development in the Third World." This Note surveys current U.S. international military student (IMS) training in internal defense and development (IDAD), as well as the training of the U.S. military in this and related areas. This Note also examines the broader social, political, and military issues related to U.S. foreign internal defense (FID) and IDAD training, and makes preliminary recommendations regarding U.S. FID and IDAD training.
