Happy Jack's Go-Buggy: A WW II Fighter Pilot's Personal Document (1979) By Jack Ilfrey with Max Reynolds

Foreword by Eddie Rickenbacker.

Ilfrey starts in the 94th Fighter Squadron - the "Hat in the Ring" squadron from WW1 days. He covers the trip over to England via the Iceland route, which was a trailblazing flight for fighters. After a short stay in England, his unit packs up and flies off to North Africa to fight after the Torch landings. On the way, he has a very interesting stop in Portugal. He becomes an Ace in North Africa.

Rotating back to the US, he trains new pilots in the P-38. After the training assignment, he is back in P-38s with the 20th Fighter Group. Six days after D-Day, he is downed by ground fire. Again, he has a very interesting evasion story getting back to the Allied lines. Unusually, he is sent back into combat with the 20th, but they have now transitioned to P-51s. The major operation he describes in his P-51 time is a shuttle mission to Russia. Ilfrey had a pretty eventful war, and his story is well worth reading.
