European Jewry's Plight: The Harrison Report on European Jewry And President Truman's Letter To General Eisenhower (c.1945) By Zionist Federation of Australia and New Zealand
The Harrison Report (1945), commissioned by President Truman and authored by Earl G. Harrison, exposed horrific conditions for Jewish Displaced Persons (DPs) in Allied-occupied Germany, revealing they lived in similar squalor to their Nazi past, lacking food, shelter, and proper care, leading to a famous quote about treating Jews like Nazis. Truman's subsequent letter to General Eisenhower urged immediate action, prompting Eisenhower's response, which acknowledged issues but highlighted improvements, ultimately leading to reforms such as the creation of separate Jewish DP camps.
The Zionist Federation of Australia and New Zealand (ZFA & NZ) published "European Jewry's Plight" around 1945 to draw attention to the severe conditions faced by Jewish Holocaust survivors. The document advocated for international intervention, specifically the creation of a Jewish national home in Palestine.
