Bulletproof: Prevailing In WWII As A Pilot & POW (2003) By Robert Barney

Many years after the war, I still reflect on the time spent as a prisoner, the bleak period when I could not imagine freedom and the terrible uncertainty of those days. Sometimes, freedom and the terrible uncertainty of those days. Sometimes, glancing back for a moment panics me, and the horror makes my stomach lurch and my heart race. I relive the helplessness of sitting at the controls of an aircraft that would no longer respond. I hear my voice issuing the order to toss young Hutchins from the aircraft, not knowing whether he was dead or alive, and recall commanding my crew to bail out. The sensation of falling disturbs my sleep, and a bright orange fireball awakens me as my aircraft explodes. The torture of standing for days in a boxcar among pitiful, suffering men, all contemplating execution, is a lasting image. Starvation and being eaten alive by vermin in the Nuremberg camp still create waves of nausea, and the sounds of bombs falling around the camp resonate in my mind. I have learned the lesson contained in the punchy phrase, "The past is not dead. It is not even past.
