Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS): Women Making History (1988)

 

Following the establishment of the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) on 1st October 1941, Australian women from all walks of life rallied to the call to defend Australia. By 1944 their peak strength was over 20,000 and women were employed throughout the Army in a wide variety of important diverse tasks. Towards the end of WWII a contingent saw active service in Lae and Hollandia and became the first servicewomen to serve outside Australia in a military capacity in wartime.
