As co-author of The East Asia Edge (with Roy Hofheinz, Jr), Kent Calder distinguished himself early in the 1980s by being among the first to draw attention to the East Asian economic 'miracle', and the challenge it posed for Western economies, at the time hit heavily by the oil price 'shocks' of the 1970s. In this volume, he focuses on four issues that he judges will most shape East Asia's future: the region's energy needs, its relations with the Middle East, regional balance-of-power politics, and rivalry between China and Japan.
